The Esso/Exxon MTF LT-1 gear oil was the spec transmission fluid from this date. In 2004 BMW switched suppliers to Castrol and the new fluid was designated MTF LT-2. According to BMW, LT-1 and LT-2 have the same properties and can be mixed or substituted. I recently purchased a 5 liter container of MTF LT-2 using my CCA discount and found that it's a 75w-80 grade gear oil. Therefore, a 80w-XX or 85w-XX should be avoided if you're not going to use the OEM fluid. From model year 2006, MTF LT-3 became the required fill for all manual transmissions with the N52 engine.

d apres ce qu ils disent la LT-1 LT-2 sont presque identique et correspondent a la castrol 75w80 ! ( si mon reste d anglais est bon ) et seulement depuis 2006 les boites ont la LT-3
